Discover the world of HOKEMA kalimbas—handcrafted musical wonders made in Germany.

Since 1985, HOKEMA has been synonymous with high-quality musical instruments. In the small town of Walsrode in Lower Saxony, the company develops and produces unique musical marvels: the kalimba and the sansula. Warm, soft, and gently soothing, their tones sound just as harmonious on their own as they do when played alongside other instruments. With these easy-to-handle kalimbas, anyone can start making music right away. The pre-tuned scales produce particularly beautiful melodies that are simply enchanting. This was also the case for founder Peter Hokema, who passionately experimented with various instruments even while studying music. In the process, he discovered traditional African plucked instruments. The breakthrough came in 2001 when Peter Hokema invented the Sansula. It consists of an oval wooden frame covered with a drumhead, with a small kalimba suspended in the center so it can vibrate freely. The sounds were an instant hit, and a patent was filed for the instrument. Today, the second-generation family-owned company is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of beautiful, easy-to-play kalimbas in a variety of models. They are meticulously handcrafted from high-quality materials such as cherry wood, exclusively in Germany and using German suppliers. The energy required for this is generated in an environmentally friendly manner by the company’s own photovoltaic system on the roof of the production facility in Walsrode.
